Abstract

The chapter explores how the surgeon and patient alike can work in a symbiotic relationship with the natural process of scar formation to achieve the best results possible. The authors give a general overview of scar formation, different types of scars, and the various elements that affect scar outcome. Then will discuss the different modalities of scar management commonly used. There is a thorough discussion of the Alpha Centella (ScarScience™) Scar Management Program and Laser Therapy, both of which have clinically and experimentally been proven effective for improving the aesthetic appearance of abnormal scars.
