Abstract

As computer and Internet-based technology have advanced in the past decades, educators experimented and developed new pedagogical approaches in music education. The use of the computer in music teaching and learning can be broadly grouped into three categories: knowledge-based exercises, software that enhances music practice, and visualization software for music teaching. The essay also briefly explores the general use of technology in music instruction in the areas of MIDI, notation software, and the new opportunities for distance delivery of music education over the Internet. The essay concludes by looking forward to the development of fuzzy logic and artificial intelligence that could bring computer use in music pedagogy to a higher level.
