Accessible Culture: Guidelines to a Cultural Accessibility Strategic Plan (C.A.S.P.) for MArRC Museum

Abstract

In recent years, the function of museums has changed, proposing a series of new methods to promote and display its collections and contribute towards collective cultural and social development. In this new vision, accessibility gains a central role, as scratching the surface of the universal design. This paper is focused on outlining barriers to cultural accessibility, solutions, and possible next steps to ensuring universal accessibility. There is still limited empirical investigation on the expectations, satisfaction, and challenges of museum’s visitors. In setting the context of Cultural Accessibility Strategic Plan discussion, the article first outlines what accessibility involves, accessibility standards and guidelines, and presents the case study of the National Archaeological Museum of Reggio Calabria, Italy. In this vein, the study draws on a qualitative research approach employing data from experts and visitors to understand those individuals’ perceptions, needs, and challenges. The guidelines are designed based on the European convention and practical experiences, as well as the national binding standards. In conclusion, the study offers several practical implications to help museum managers enhance the experience of multi-features visitors.
