Abstract

This chapter brings together the findings of the book and provides brief answers to the research questions. It posits that in the areas of EU regulation studied in the book policymakers have limited capacity to effectively pose a regulatory threat. Rather, it is the experts, innovators and operators posing a challenge to regulation. There is an eminent risk for regulators to reward gatekeeping (expert), protect market power (innovator) and amplify autonomy (operator). Further, the industry case studies and the analysis of Brexit back up the argument that corporations do not simply strive for deregulation, but for power in regulation. The book concludes by summarising the contributions made to existing literature and identifies perspectives for both future developments in relevant policy fields and future research.
