Abstract

Healthcare professionals (HCPs, doctors, nurses, paramedics) working in the fields of general forensic or sexual offence medicine need to be aware of the fundamental principles underpinning their practice. These doctors, nurses and paramedics have dual roles. Most importantly a therapeutic role to keep patients safe, but also a forensic role in the assessment of suspects detained by the police and complainants/complainers of (sexual) assault. It is essential that HCPs are aware of the ethical principles underpinning their practice, including the requirement to obtain appropriate consent, and maintain confidentiality, except in certain circumstances.
