Abstract

Objective: this study aimed to comprehend meanings of conflicts and ethical dilemmas experienced by nurses in their professional practice in a surgical center. Method: a phenomenological research based on Edmund Husserl's fundaments. The analysis has two sections: first based on Martins and Bicudo using phenomenological interview and the second on method of analysis of moral problems proposed by Diego Gracia. Nurses of public institution in Salvador (BA) participated. Results: the nurses understand the meaning of ethical dilemma as decisions in the face of situations experience and the conflict due to divergence of opinions. They experience conflicts and dilemma due to the lack of in vacancies for the demand of patients, lack of planning for the care of patient in post-operation and decision-making in the face of conflicts and dilemma. Conclusion: despite the difficult to recognize the conflicts and ethical dilemmas, they take decisions and, by doing so, they try to keep the emotional balance of the group and the harmony in the workplace environment.
