Reviews the book, Investigations in Healthcare Interpreting edited by B. Metzger and M. Metzger (2014). The book touches on a myriad of relevant topics including interpreter performance standards, medical education training on working with interpreters, legal responsibilities, informed consent, and the importance of deaf awareness training for health care providers. The contributing authors present a wide range of critical issues in the current state of interpreting in health care environments. The book consists of studies on a number of topics critical to health care interpreting today. These include emerging trends in conceptualizing bilingual health communication; Spanish speaking health care patients and English-speaking health care providers in a public California hospital; and Ausland/English interpreters’ requests for clarification and their interpretation of requests for clarification by the consumers. This book illuminates critical features that comprise interpreted medical encounters and offers valuable contributions to the emerging specialty area of health care interpreting.
