This chapter provides an overview of evaluation and measurement used in the prediction of recovery from brain injury. We include those rating scales, checklists, and norm-referenced tests that have been associated with recovery in the medical and neuropsychological literatures. We compare the statistical robustness of those measures reported as having the greatest predictive validity. Finally, we offer recommendations for improving the prediction of functional outcomes. Within this chapter we consider three broad areas. The section Rating of Traumatic Injury, deals with methods and instruments useful in evaluating survival, cognition, and functional abilities. The Capacity for Independent Living section addresses a patient's ability to return to work or school, drive, and integrate socially. The section entitled Disability Determination reviews definitions and rating methods used to determine the degree of disability experienced by patients following brain injury. Four changes in the national approach to head injury research are discussed. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2012 APA, all rights reserved). (chapter)
