Albinaria in Central and Eastern Crete: Distribution map of the species (Pulmonata: Clausiliidae)

Abstract

Between 1984 and 1996, the distribution of Albinaria in an area of approximately 6000 km2 in central and eastern Crete has been investigated at a scale of 1 x 1 km. The distribution map presented in this paper covers the area between Rethimno and Sitia. Albinaria has been found in more than 3000 1 x 1 km squares. Areas where Albinaria does not live are also indicated on the map. For 1 km squares in these areas the term empty squares is proposed. As a result of the discovery of hybrid zones in the field, the taxa leonisorum, fulvula, purpurea and moreletiana are classified as A. corrugata, and the taxon sturanyi synonymized with A. teres. The distributional areas of these forms are also given.
