Analysis of Students' Misconceptions on Chemical Equilibrium Material Using Four-tier Diagnostic Test

Abstract

This study is descriptive quantitative research that aims to describe the chemical equilibrium misconceptions experienced by high school students. This study involved 86 eleventh-grade high school students and 56 twelfth-grade students. Students' misconception was analyzed using a four-tier diagnostic test which has four levels. The test given was in the form of 20 multiple choice questions and each question consisted of four levels. The first level contains questions and answer choices, the second tier contains the confidence scale for the answers in the first tier, the third tier contains the choice of reasons that underlie the answers in the first tier, and the fourth tier contains the confidence scale for the reasons in the third tier. The results showed that the average percentage of misconceptions experienced by high school students in 11th grade and 12th grade is 47.67% and 57.54% respectively. Both 11th grade and 12th grade high school students have the highest average percentage of misconceptions that occur in the dynamic equilibrium sub-concept.
