The Nursing Minimum Data Set: Effort to Standardize Collection of Essential Nursing Data

Abstract

The concept of the Nursing Minimum Data Set (NMDS), which is based on the concept of the Uniform Minimum Health Data Sets (UMHDS), is described in relation to its purposes and consensually derived elements and definitions. A brief report of pilot test findings is given, and implications for clinical practice, administration, research, and education are highlighted. The NMDS is viewed as a link in integrating computers into nursing care across all practice settings.
