Although about one-half of released carbon has been sequestered by the ocean and the land biosphere, stabilization of atmospheric C02 levels, and thus a limitation of greenhouse gas warming, requires that carbon emissions are reduced well below 1990 levels. For if adverse cli mate changes do indeed materialise, trends may be persistent and even become aggravated.
