Abstract

The standard therapy of congestive heart failure (CHF) consists of a diuretic and an angiotensin-converting-enzyme inhibitor. In the case of CHF caused by dilated cardiomyopathy and in the case of advanced CHF caused by myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) it is reasonable to add Pimobendan. It seems that Spironolactone also shows a positive effect in combination with standard therapy. In the case of asymptomatic MMVD no secure protective effect of an early therapy has been described up to now. A thorough evaluation including echocardiography and crucial judgement of the raised results is the basis of good therapeutic decisions. © Schlütersche Verlagsgesellschaft mbH & Co. KG.
