Abstract

The construction of a reliable smart grid necessitates a better understanding of the potential consequences of successful cyber assaults. Estimating the impact of a possible assault necessitates a consideration of the grid’s reliance on its cyber infrastructure as well as its ability to withstand any failures. To establish the adequacy of cybersecurity efforts, more research into the cyber-physical relationships inside the smart grid, as well as a detailed review of prospective attack vectors, is required. To avoid, mitigate, and tolerate cyberattacks, this chapter emphasizes the importance of cyber infrastructure security in conjunction with power application security. Based on the security of both the physical power applications and the supporting cyber infrastructure, a tiered method to risk evaluation is provided. A classification is offered to emphasize the cyber-physical interdependencies. The controls needed to support the smart grid, and the communications and calculations that need to be protected from cyber- attacks. Next, this chapter presents current research efforts aimed at improving the security of smart grid applications and infrastructure. Finally, current challenges are identified to facilitate future research efforts. It is often believed that existing solutions can be applied directly to new engineering domains. Unfortunately, careful study of the unique challenges posed by new disciplines reveals their specificity and often requires new approaches and solutions.
