The granule cells of the cerebellar cortex are among thesmallest nerve cells in the body. In the middle of the nineteenthcentury they were still considered to be connectivetissue cells, and as late as 1900 BETHE doubted theirneural nature. Our present knowledge of them is duefirst to GOLGI (1874 and 1883), who demonstrated theirdendritic and axonal processes, and second to RAMÓN YCAJAL (1888 a and b, 1911), whose precise description oftheir form and synaptic relations has hardly been modifiedby subsequent work.
