Abstract

Albumin continues to be one of the options for colloid resuscitation in critically ill patients despite limited evidence for its use. It does seem to have an advantage over other colloids with a better side-effect profile. With it’s ability to increase intravascular oncotic pressure and other postulated metabolic benefits, albumin is preferred by many practioners worldwide for fluid resuscitation amongst ICU patients. In some studies outcome benefits have been shown, especially in patients with sepsis and post cardiac surgery patients. Limitations of its use are associated with its availability, cost and limited side-effect profile.
