Abstract

Brunei Darussalam (Brunei) is a small sultanate, 5,765 km2 in size, located in the north of Borneo. Despite the extensive authority of the sultanate that historically reached beyond northern Borneo to the southern Philippines, its power contracted significantly in the nineteenth century following internal conflict and territorial cession to British colonialists (Saunders in A history of Brunei. Oxford University Press, Oxford, 1994).
