Abstract

The purpose of this tutorial is to highlight several aspects of mobile and wireless communications networks. A first part presents a brief overview of the market and technology evolution. The second part is devoted to the radio propagation channel characteristics. In the third section, we present an overview of the transmission techniques related to the definition of new mobile communications systems. The design of these systems is based on a realistic modeling of the transmission channel. Thus, several measurement campaigns are realized in order to characterize the mobile radio propagation channel in various environments (urban, rural, and indoor). Finally, the research topics in progress are presented.
