The goal of managing patients with penetrating abdominal trauma is to quickly and efficiently assess injuries and establish treatment priorities. The focus of the primary survey is resuscitation with continuous assessment of vital signs and control of hemorrhage. This is followed by a detailed secondary survey and initiation of definitive care; this is influenced by the hemodynamic stability of the patient as well as the location and mechanism of their injury.
