This paper proposes an agent-based simulation model approach as one theoretical and methodological approach which helps derive knowledge that refers to the mechanisms and functions of social networks as a means of social capital production and dissemination. The approach is embedded in an empirical case study of two Austrian regions where a social project on enhancing well-being has been conducted. The data obtained from the simulation models are thus semi-empirical and semi-simulated. The primary aim of the paper is to investigate the selection processes of agents of different types and the linkage processes between them.
