A Russian proverb was espoused by former president Ronald Regan in the 1980s in negotiations with the Soviet leadership, 'Trust, but verify.' This same concept has been adopted by many physicians working with patients on chronic opioid therapy. Physicians that prescribe chronic opioid therapy have an ethical and legal responsibility lo monitor for treatment adherence. One way to enhance the trust between the prescribing physician and the patient is lo implement a comprehensive adherence-monitoring program.
