The Orchidaceae are one of the largest families of flowering plants and the most highly evolved family among the monoeotyledones. In the Schlechter system, it is divided into 88 subtribes, over 660 genera, and at least 25000 species. Additionally over 25000 hybrids have been produced by crossing wild and cultivated forms, according to the book Orchids (Shuttlework et al. 1970).
