A theoretical analysis of self-focusing in waveguides is presented. Our analysis yields a critical power for self-focusing in waveguides which is by a factor of 5 larger than the respective critical power in bulk materials. The theory is used to obtain design criteria for multimode fiber-amplifiers and for hollow waveguide pulse compression systems.
