Abstract

Due to growing concern with regard to sustainability, food security and well-being, organic products are more on the market shelves, with higher values, perceived by consumers. Close links between organic food production and urban agriculture provide environmental and social benefits due to the complementarity of ideas and practices. The organic cultivation of strawberries in urban spaces by small producers is analyzed and the financial viability for the local market is evaluated. Current research comprises a case study in the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil, featuring qualitative and quantitative approaches. Primary data were collected by semi-structured interviews and field observation, whilst secondary data were collected through documentary research. Information was classified and processed by Excel for financial indexes. Results reveal social and environmental benefits derived from the urban cultivation of strawberries conducted under organic production system. Further, invested money may be recovered in just over two years and, consequently, a medium-term return on investment.
