Investigations on 0. 8% C steels containing, respectively, 0. 06 to 5% Cr, 0. 49 to 2% Mo, and 0. 5 to 1% V showed that Cr accelerates spheriodization of carbides by a slow cooling anneal, whereas Mo and V have little effect. This behavior is attributed to the fact that in the Cr steels the carbides precipitating during the eutectoid reaction are identical with those surviving in the austenite, but in the Mo and V steels they differ.
