Abstract

The study includes forecasts for oil, natural gas, coal and other energy sources to the year 2000. Short and long-term energy forecasts use scenario analysis and a range of economic growth rates. The energy analysis focuses on OECD countries but includes forecasts for centrally planned economies, developing countries, and OPEC. The first volume of this title (1977) examined what could be done to move towards a better mix of energy supplies in industrialized countries. The analysis in this second book reveals that the current oil glut conceals the underlying nature of the long term energy problem. The uncertainties that surround future energy and oil market developments are explored under several scenarios forecasting energy demand and supply to 1990 and 2000. Oil plays a critical role in the energy mix. The study projects trends in energy demand and supply and the resulting oil import demand of OECD countries and other major global regions for the rest of the century. -from Author
