Abstract

The South American genus Himatanthus (Apocynaceae) includes nine species. Himatanthus drasticus, known in Brazil as “janaguba,” is used in popular medicine to treat inflammation, gastric ulcers and tumors. Scientific studies have confirmed that its latex, popularly referred to as “leite de janaguba” (janaguba milk), exhibits some important therapeutic activities.
