Abstract

H. H. Gran (1870--1955), the renowned Norwegian phytoplanktologist, published the first English-language review of the field of phytoplankton ecology as a chapter in Murray and Hjort's ``The Depth of the Ocean'' (1912). Although ostensibly a report on the results of the Michael Sars cruises, each chapter also offered a summary of the state of biological oceanography up to that time. Gran's chapter was not intended to be an exhaustive, historical account, only touching on the principal developments and providing names but not references. This paper is a small addendum to his contribution.
