Abstract

The paper reports on the transformation of a master level university course (lecture style) by supplementing it with a "small private online course" (SPOC). The online course included micro learning elements and activities that are often used in the context of MOOCs like lecture videos or auto-grading tests, but also provided a platform for publishing content that was generated by the students in group work. Technically, the online course was conducted in a Moodle LMS that was extended by a self-developed video-plugin. The experience was evaluated using two questionnaires and the results were discussed with the students to gain further insights. The evaluation results are critically discussed to identify success factors and pitfalls for resource-intensive blended learning scenarios. © 2014 Springer International Publishing Switzerland.
