Abstract

In this paper high intensity wet magnetic separators (HIWMS) and high gradient magnetic separators (HGMS) are discussed. Among HIWMS three types are presented: Frantz ferrofilter, NY type drum separator and Jones separator. HGMS is called the Solenoid separator or Kolm-Marston separator. The operating principle and design features of every type are described. Four examples of HGMS application are given: separation of soft-itabirite, scheelite, removal of pyrites from sericite and removal of sulfur and ash from coal. At present 18 HGMS are used in Japan: 8 in the fields of mineral and energy resources, 6 for waste water treatment and in iron and steel industries, and 4 for filtration of condensate at power plants.
