Abstract

Low back pain is an important reason for hospital admissions. Low back pain affects the families and environment of patients by causing economic losses, decreases in work performance, need for medical care and psychological stress. We classify low back pain according to the duration of symptoms as acute, subacute and chronic. The diagnosis and treatment process is shaped according to this classification. We can collect the etiology of low back pain under three main headings. These are mechanical low back pain, nonmechanical low back pain and referred pain. Age, weight, occupational, sociocultural and psychosocial factors are important risk factors for low back pain. In the approach to the patient with low back pain, detailed anamnesis, detailed physical examination and imaging methods are used. Although the treatment varies according to the etiology, rest, medical treatments, exercise, physical therapy programs and surgical treatments are the primary approaches.
