Panufnik's eighth symphony, Sinfonia Votiva, was written in 1981 for the centennial celebration of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and was dedicated to a famous icon of the the Black Madonna of Czestochowa. It was consciously structured in terms of the figure eight, which can also be seen as a structuring motif in the icon. Curiously, the same motif of the circle as a structuring device is also present in the book of Jonah, which consists of two movements arranged concentrically, each of which in turn contains two "circular" parts arranged like Panufnik's "mother diagram". Artists working in medieval icons, modern music, and ancient Hebrew literature have apparently followed somewhat similar conventions to achieve a sense of balance and symmetry in their work.
