Abstract

On March 3, 1865, President Lincoln established a national soldiers' and sailors' asylum. The Veterans Health Administration (VHA) evolved from facilities established for Civil War veterans of the Union Army, and today, VHA continues to meet veterans' changing medical, surgical, and quality-of-life needs by operating America's largest integrated health system.
