In recent years it has become increasingly common for ELT professionals to undertake a programme of study at MA level.1 Such programmes typically offer a relatively in-depth introduction to academic research and theorising about the nature of the English language, language learning and teaching. They also usually attempt to equip participants with the skills and understanding needed for carrying out small-scale research projects into aspects of ELT practice of personal interest.
