Abstract

Body Mapping is a somatic (mind-body) education technique designed to teach musicians skills of self-evaluation and change for performing with sensory-motor integrity. It is one of the most recent disciplines to enter the somatic field and the only one currently with a primary focus on the movement needs of musicians. A self-inquiry method, the underlying premise of Body Mapping is the importance of understanding the neurophysiological connections in the human body that lead to freedom of movement. In addition to cultivating accurate and adequate body maps, the integration of kinesthesia into sensory awareness and the development of inclusive awareness provide musicians with the skills for embodied performing. Quality of movement is critical for singers because it underlies all forms of musical communication and expression. This chapter presents vital information about the importance of movement for singers at every stage of their development. Beginning with accurate mind-body awareness, this chapter explains specific information clarifying a range of mapping errors and movement misunderstandings that plague singers and contribute to technical problems, musical frustrations, and music performance related injuries. The positive impact of BMG is illustrated through research case studies of college-level music students whose experiences revealed enhanced ability for and personal confidence with musical expression and heightened development of self-awareness. Body Mapping techniques may be readily integrated with vocal pedagogy to assist in evaluating the effectiveness of performance skills and for teaching singers to perform with ease.
