World cement production has been increasing steadily in the past and due to the unique nature of cement manufacturing, cement production is energy-and carbon-intensive. This makes it a key source of CO 2 emissions. Cement production accounts for around 7% of total industrial fuel use, and almost 25% of total direct CO 2 emissions from industry. It was estimated that in 2000, the cement industry emitted around 1.4 GtCO 2 , which accounted for approximately 5% of the global total anthropogenic CO 2 emissions. This increased to 1.9 Gt in 2005, which was almost 8% of total global CO 2 emissions. This report reviews the current state of the cement industry in terms of CO 2 emissions and possible mitigation strategies. Technologies and other measures that improve the energy efficiencies and reduce CO 2 emissions in the cement production processes are examined. The costs of implementing the technologies and the resultant CO 2 savings are evaluated.
