The ultimate goal of standards and surveys is to minimize risk. In the case of device processing, risk can result from exposure to soiled medical instruments, improper cleaning or sterilization processes, and damaging or losing medical devices. Developing policies and procedures that are compliant with regulations and standards is important. A comprehensive approach involving administration, surgical teams, SPDs, accreditation, and the infection prevention department is vital to achieving success. To develop a successful device precleaning strategy, the processes need to be realistic to follow, the products used need to fit the processes, team members need to be educated and empowered, and leaders need to hold everyone accountable. Putting together these pieces will reduce the risk of patient harm and help ensure compliance with recommendations.
