Abstract

Considers the increasing pace of man-induced landscape change in the UK in the 20th century, with machine use increasing significantly after World War Two, and the loss of landscape features, reflecting equally drastic ecosystem changes, becoming more apparent since the early 1980s. The paper considers: 20th century change; public responses to conservation concepts; legislative steps towards protected landscapes; new approaches to landscape conservation; the 1981 Wildlife and Countryside Act; and future prospects. -P.Hardiman
