Abstract

The rapid technological advances of the past decade, and the availability of higher levels of automation which results, have aroused interest in the role of man in complex systems. Should the human be an active element in the control loop, operating manual manipulators in response to signals presented by various instruments and displays? Or should the signals be coupled directly into an automatic controller, delegating the human to the monitoring role of a supervisor of the system's operation?
