HIV-1 reverse transcriptase (RT) is responsible for conversion of the viral single-stranded (+)RNA into double-stranded DNA. The enzyme is multifunctional and possesses two distinct activities: (i) a DNA polymerase activity that can use either RNA or DNA as a template and (ii) a ribonuclease H (RNase H) activity that degrades the RNA strand in RNA/DNA duplexes.
