Mol. beams of bare metal clusters contg. up to 30-40 atoms of either Sn or Pb are prepd. by laser vaporization in a pulsed nozzle source. Laser photoionization mass spectra of these clusters are characterized by magic no. patterns. Laser wavelength and power dependence studies, and comparisons to previous electron impact data, probe stability in both neutral and cation clusters.
