In this chapter, we will explore a case involving a 36-year-old woman in Brazil who has been infected with the Zika virus and whose pregnancy is now affected by suspected Congenital Zika Syndrome (CZS). At the conclusion of the case discussion, learners will be able to identify sources of information and recommendations to address current global infectious disease outbreaks; apply ethical principles to global public health concerns, such as Zika; analyze the ethical and legal issues surrounding abortion in the setting of a potentially devastating congenital infection, with special attention to the concept of conscientious objection; and explore the concepts of bedside rationing and resource allocation in healthcare and research in a global context.
