We demonstrate the full characterization of a high average power 1 kHz laser system, producing 4.5 mJ in 16 fs (0.28 TW). It uses cryogenic cooling of the power amplifier crystal to eliminate thermal distortions. The laser system is scalable to peak powers of > 1 TW, and we are currently constructing a 2 TW version, which uses diode pumped pump lasers, in a very compact design. This new laser system, will produce 15 fs pulses with an energy of 28 mJ at a 1 kHz repetition rate.
