Abstract

Almost every aspect of casting and being cast in musical theatre has changed tremendously over the past decade. Actors’ Equity Association is now handling audition sign-ups online and many casting directors have created software to manage the entire process of non-equity open calls in an online format. Digital technology has also transformed the way actors interact with casting directors. Web-savvy actors must curate an online brand, successfully leverage social media, and exploit micro-celebrity opportunities to find success in musical theatre on Broadway and beyond. Through interviews with New York casting directors and actors who are using the Internet and social media in creative, unique ways, this chapter explores the changes in casting and being cast in the digital age.
