Abstract

Having edited the two-volume set, The Catholic Church in Taiwan, Francis So remarks that the general editorial approach has been soberly logical, keeping as close as possible to historical development through a layman’s perspective rather than an ecclesiastical one. He further points out that the beginnings of the Church in Taiwan reflected the struggling experience of the Taiwan mission among Western powers, China and Japan. Yet it transcended those boundaries to keep close to the local cultural values that appeal to the faithful and non-faithful alike. Two crucial issues remain after 160 years of church history: mobility of the Church and evangelization strategies that will stand the test of time.
