UV irradiation induces lipid and protein peroxidation in mammalian cells. In the present study, we report the protective effect of G on UVC-induced lipid and protein peroxidation using lecithin and BSA in vitro model.Treatment of lipid or protein solution with G before 30 minutes of irradiation inhibited UVC induced peroxidation. And the anti-peroxidation had a dose-effect relationship with the concentration of G. Moreover, the protective effect of G on DNA damage in rat spleen lymphocytes induced by UVC was evaluated using single cell electrophoresis (comet assay). G caused DNA repair when compared with the control group. When lymphocytes in the medium added G were irradiated by UVC and incubated for 30min, the DNA damage decrease at the concentration 6.1uM and 390uM, while repair decreased at a concentration of 3.05mM and 50mM. This result was accorded with MTT assay. Thus, G could reduce UVC-induced damage at low concentration of less than 390uM, and there is a dose-effect relationship. The result provides research basis to develop new anti-radiation products. © 2012 Springer-Verlag GmbH.
