Some Basic Concepts of Action

Abstract

This paper presents the elements of a causal theory of action. I use the term ‘causal’ here because the principal construction employed in my analysis of the role of agents as authors or originators pertains to agent causality. The construction that I have in mind is ‘a brings it about that p’ It is not certain that this can be analysed in terms of anything simpler or more fundamental than itself. But it can be elaborated, it seems to me, in terms that make it possible to set out the principles of our reasoning with it. It is terms of this sort which I refer to when I speak of basic concepts of action.
