Regular visual observations, principally by members of the Aurora Section of the British Astronomical Association, have been made systematically over a period of at least 25 years. The data assembled by the Section are specially useful in current research. What noctilucent clouds are, how they are thought to occur, and what future research lines seem likely, are reviewed in this contribution. -Author
