Abstract

(from the introduction) Examines the influence of day care educators on the socialization of children's emotional and social behavior. The chapter reviews studies of the influence of home care vs day care and quality of child care environments on the development of social and emotional competence in preschool and school aged children. Using the parent socialization literature, the authors develop and examine a model of teacher-child interaction and its influence on children's development. The chapter also considers factors in child care environments that facilitate social and emotional development in relation to possible interventions.
