Fishmeal (FM) replacement by soybean (SM) meal in the diets of piavuçu, Leporinus macrocephalus (Characiformes, Anostomidae) fingerlings is evaluated. 150 fishes with initial mean weight of 0.52±0.01g were distributed in 30 net ponds, in a randomized block design, with six different diets (20, 16, 12, 8, 4 and 0% FM in diets) and five replicates. Isoproteinic, isocaloric, isocalcic diets and isoaminoacid for lisine and methionine+cistine were given during forty days. Quadratic effect (p<0,03) was reported to average values of final weight, percentage of gain weight and efficiency protein ratio with the increase of replacement levels of FM by SM in diets with minimal values at 10.99, 13.59 and 13.22% of FM inclusion in diet. The feed: gain had its highest value at 12.99% of FM. The survival rate was not affected. It may be concluded that the soybean meal may replace totally the fishmeal in the diet of Leporinus macrocephalus fingerlings
